How Walking Can Compliment Your Workout Routine

May 15, 2012 by guestcontributor

It is tough reality that it takes more work to lose weight than it is to gain those extra pounds. But instead of being discouraged, you need to push yourself even further and take extra measures to ensure you reach your weight loss goals. You should not be content with your workout routine and compliment it with diet, lifestyle, and extra hard work to speed up results.

Walking is believed to be an effective yet practical method to enhance workout results. There are weight loss supplements such as ephedra that are designed to increase your metabolism and shed off unwanted pounds in no time. However, walking a few miles per day is not much of an effort and yet it can make a huge difference in your fitness goals.

According to experts, it is possible to boost your weight loss and fitness results by adding walking as part of your daily exercise regimen. This is true even if you do not make any drastic changes to your diet. Cutting down on your caloric intake is recommended though if you do not want to become counter-productive in your weight loss efforts. You must also refrain from relying on the intake of weight loss supplements because it is no replacement for a healthy diet.

It is not difficult to follow a walking program, which makes it an appropriate choice to compliment your existing workout program. All you need to do is spend 30 minutes to an hour of walking a day. Ideally, your pace should be at 2 to 4 miles per hour and should be done five times a week. Increasing the pace and the length of time you spend walking each day will help to elevate your heart rate and burn more calories. But as with anything, you need to stick with your plan if you expect to see results.

Providing A Safe Place For Kids To Play Outside

Providing A Safe Place For Kids To Play Outside

Providing A Safe Place For Kids To Play Outside

There is no higher priority than our kids’ safety, and having a safe place for them to play outside is something that is invaluable. If you have small children, especially more than one, you can’t possibly expect them to spend all of their time indoors, but before you venture outside, you will want to make sure that wherever you decide to take your kids, their safety will not be an issue.

For most people, the ideal place to take your kids on your off time would be the local park, usually within walking distance from home. With plenty of things for you and your kids to do, you could choose whether you’d like to play some ball in the grass or spend some time in the sandbox around a plastic commercial playground with all of the other kids.

There are a lot of valuable things that kids can learn by spending time outdoors, much more than you might have ever thought in the past. You should not underestimate the importance of the health and social benefits that kids develop by spending time outdoors. From early childhood all the way to adulthood, spending time outside and keeping active will keep you in better spirits as well as health.

For kids, that starts on playgrounds for preschools, where they learn how to interact with other kids of their own age, in most cases for the first time in their lives. This will continue on in kindergarten and throughout grade school, where they will have free time throughout the day to decompress and enjoy themselves in between their lessons. In junior high and high school, though they no longer get the freedom associated with recess, they take part in physical education, where they learn a variety of sports and activities, and learn how to work in teams, as well as many other valuable skills.

Later in life, you should be able to see the value in the skills learned throughout childhood and beyond, and over the course of this time, you’ll find ways to get stronger and healthier. It’s a lot more than just playing and running around outside; it’s a means to develop trends in your own life that will help you in many more ways than you might even realize. Even if you didn’t think about it before, keeping this in mind, you could use this information to help your kids and get them involved and more active outdoors.

If the Shoe Fits: Choosing a Walking Shoe

Nov 3, 2011 by admin

Not everyone is so enthused about exercising that he has memberships to three gyms, has exercise equipment in the corner of his family room and has three-, five- and ten-mile running routes mapped with alternating terrain challenges. Most of us fall far below that level of commitment, and for those of us just starting an exercise program, walking is an excellent starting point that often becomes the foundation of a regular routine. However, even the most dedicated newbie can suffer injury and become discouraged quickly if he wears the wrong shoes while walking.

Picture someone in shorts and a t-shirt on a warm day. He has his towel, watch, sunglasses and wallet tucked safely away, and off he goes. By the time he reaches the first corner, he has a blister; his ankles are sore, and he’s sure his arches have fallen.

Who knew wearing high heels was bad for walking for exercise? The right—or wrong—shoe makes a difference!

When you are beginning a walking exercise regime, don’t buy the most expensive walking shoe you can afford. They should be a separate pair of shoes from your everyday pair, but you don’t have to clean out your bank account. Determine your budget and start looking about mid-range.

You want to look for certain construction elements, comfort and fit. Your first pair of walking shoes may not last very long: You might change your mind or determine you like it so well that you want an even better pair. But look for support first.

Walking ShoeWalking shoes have wide sole bases. Some models have soles as wide or wider than the actual shoe material that covers your foot. That wide base steadies and supports your stride, and it’s very important.

Next, look for cushioning in the sole. Walking doesn’t present as high of impact on your bones, joints and muscles, but there’s more than what’s experienced just sitting on the couch playing video games. Give yourself that bit of ease and comfort.

Make sure there is adequate arch support. Even if you don’t have fallen arches naturally, what support you can provide the bone structure in your foot can only benefit you—so long as it’s still comfortable enough when you’re walking. If there is inadequate arch support built into the shoe, purchase separate inserts that provide it.

Ensure you can fasten the shoes comfortably without pinching any part of your foot, yet not allow the foot to “swim” in the shoe at all. Allow the proper size toe box for your foot: Squeezing toes together just to look good while you walk is counterproductive to maintaining a walking exercise routine. If your foot, leg or back hurts when you walk, although you look good doing it, you won’t continue, and you loose all the physical and mental health benefits from this terrific cardio- and muscular exercise.

Make sure your walking shoe fits, and when the shoe fits, wear it often and well as you walk for exercise, fun and socialization!
